1. So, I have to say, similar to you, I played several previous versions, but never the old box set. Lately, my group has been tooling around with some of the Mutant Future (a retro-feeling take on the apocalyptic madness of Gamma World), and had a blast, so I had to pick this box set up. Having run a game with it yesterday, I have to say that it is not a *serious* take on the idea, but with a few simple mods, you can make it more serious. We played it by the book, changing Alpha mutations (the cards) every encounter. Personally, I felt that it was a little too “wild” for me. However, the character’s origin powers are always constant, so it’s really just kind of an extra, non-iconic mutation that sits on top of the character. I believe the “fluff” behind it is that your character’s are constantly mutating, and pulling all sorts of abilities from the conergent timelines etc. However, I think that the concept of each player building a little deck of cards to choose from might be good, and a way to tailor mutation options to them a bit. We had also talked about changing mutations out every extended rest. However, reality aside, the mechanics were good, and kept players interested in what they were going to get next. The cards are an excellent format for this, as they could be handed out and understood quickly. Just my 2 cp, but I hope you enjoy it. My group had a blast.

    1. I think that’s the part that turns me off the most….the wild, changing mutations. I’m also not a big fan of the clashed realities thing….I already own a copy of RIFTS 😛 I’ve actually been looking at Mutant Future a lot since I posted this the other day. It looks pretty solid and, to be honest, reminds me a lot of the stuff we played.
